Education and Schooling
Major portins of our lives when we are younger are spent in School where we are supposed to be taught skills that will be used in our careers, social interactions, and with morality. Schooling helps to provide us the groundwork with which we are able to comprehend concepts, truths, and ideals which is one of the reasons that we continue to treat schooling as a focal point of our culture.
But increasingly we have been driving out the idea of a well-rounded individual and are instead using schooling as a means to specialize in a particular area of a field. As we do this we are creating individuals who are good at one task, and only one task. This means that as industries grow they need more employees to account for the tunnel view that has been created by traditional schooling.
Over the years I’ve learned that I should never let my schooling interfere with my education, they may be thought of as similar concepts but they are far from that. As you work towards a degree in a particular field you will be asked to specialize in a particular part, don’t choose something that you are good at choose something that challenges you. This will allow you to educate yourself wwithout the shackles posed by schooling in other areas of your field. School these days provides students with a false sense of security, these dats a degree doesn’t mean that you have knowledge in a particular field but instead shows that you had the tenacity to jump through the hoops required to get that degree.
This tenacity helps to separate you from others who don’t have a degree, but it is important to remember that all a degree shows is that you are willing to stick through something. You could easily go to a job interview and be up against someone like me, I’ve worked in my field for 4 years at various companies and I’m still finishing my degree. The problem lies not with a recent graduates lack of experience but with the failure presented by our system of schooling. We don’t teach relevant materials which are applicable to a career, but instead we teach abstract concepts which can be applied to that job given the appropirate knowledge.
What it comes down to is you shouldn’t rely on your schooling to get you where you need/want to be, but instead you should seek to educate yourself using the tools gained from schooling. Most of all though you should neverm ever, let your schooling interfere with your education such interference will just leave you to pick up the pieces and re-educate yourself.
